The Sankofa Farmers Market was established to satisfy a need for healthy produce in New Orleans’ underserved and low income communities. It is the only open-air fresh market in the Ninth Ward area within a five-mile radius of the Treme, Seventh Ward, Faubourg Marigny, French Quarter, Gentilly and Mid-City neighborhoods. Founded in 2010, the Farmers Market continues to grow with new vendors and products.

The Farmers Market serves as a community anchor, stimulating the economy for local farmers, fishers, and food producers within a neighborhood gathering space, providing residents with access to local foods, and awakening an interest in healthier living.

Its mission is to educate about the importance of providing whole, healthy meals for ourselves and our families in a community afflicted with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. The change begins with substantive diets rich in fruits and vegetables and the continued advocacy of youth programs which encourage positive eating habits that will allow our children to grow and thrive. Visit the Sankofa Farmers Market this Saturday to be a part of our change!

SNAP benefits, Visa, and MasterCard are accepted at the Sankofa Farmers Market.
