The Frederick Douglass Garden is the outdoor educational space for the HEAL Project. HEAL students cultivate and harvest herbs and vegetables in this garden, located at their former school campus site. The students then sell their produce at Sankofa Farmers Market every Saturday. The Frederick Douglass garden was developed on a 1,500 square foot plot of land, previously covered with granite rocks.
The Garden is located at 3820 N. Rampart Street.
"Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are the men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will."
-Frederick Douglass, 1857
